Head turning, high gloss fenders of gleaming stainless. Double downtube frame. Gear up right, then grab a little freedom. A lot. Ride in style on the completely new styled Z90. You deserve it." From a Z90 print ad.
For consignment, a 1974 Harley Davidson Z90 showing 1,394 miles, but true miles are unknown. Between 1973 and 1975, nearly 18,000 Z90's were built, marketed to those who preferred a larger mini bike and was suited for road riding and offroad adventures.
Exterior
A bike that's obviously been loved shows patina in the form of surface rust, faded decals, scratched paint, and a few missing parts. The engine and exhaust are not mounted on the frame but are included in the sale. Here's a bike that presents with great bones and is ideal for restoration. The AMF and other decals on the tank are faded on the left side, but in better shape on the opposite side while the tank's single stage black paint presents with a satin finish. Some chrome has flaked from the handlebars and replaced with some surface rust, while the rear fender's stainless finish is in decent shape, although missing tail light. The black vinyl seat has some stitching that's MIA and thus openings are present but the foam appears to be in good shape and there are no tears in the vinyl. One front turn signal is missing an amber lens and another is completely missing from the back. A speedometer is front and center and some switchgear is available near the grips.
Drivetrain
The 90 in Z90 referred to the CC's of course, and that's what we have here in barn find condition and separated from the bike. The ad noted its "metered oil injection" eliminating the need for pre mix, and a 4-speed transmission. This bike wears drum brakes inside the 17-inch chrome wire wheels in front and the 16-inchers in back. Suspension consists of a telescopic fork in front and swing arm with coil springs in back.
The Z90's were made by Aermacchi and sold as AMF HD models. During this same period, Aermacchi also produced the X90, more of a mini bike promoted for leisure activities and nearly 17,000 were produced. Each of these models, due to their relative rarity and diminutive size, are highly collectible in the world of motorbikes. This one presents a fantastic opportunity to restore a small bike that is easy to maneuver and store.
