<b>The Life of this L88 </b>
The history of this <b>1969 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe L88</b> begins in 1970 when Francis Sandy Sanderlin, a U.S. Navy Admiral, purchased the car brand new from Courtesy Chevrolet. Sanderlin acquired the Corvette after being involved in a head-on collision with his previous 1969 ZL-1 Corvette. After purchasing the L88, he transferred the license plate ZL-X from his ZL-1onto the new car. Sanderlin owned the Corvette for approximately two years before trading it back to the dealership in 1972 for a Chevrolet K5 Blazer.
Later in 1972, the car was resold by Courtesy Chevrolet to John Putnam of Santee, California. At the time of the sale, the Corvette had accumulated just 2,800 miles. Putnam retained ownership for more than a decade before selling the car on June 16, 1984, to Paul N. Ellingsen. Ellingsen purchased the Corvette for $10,500 and acquired the California license plate 777 HDM for an additional $1,250.
During Ellingsen?'ownership, the Corvette achieved significant recognition within the collector community. In 1986, the car received Bloomington Gold Certification and earned an NCRS Top Flight Award at the Reno-Sparks National Convention hosted by the National Corvette Restorers Society. The following year it received another NCRS Top Flight Award. The car was also invited to the Showcase of American Legends in Palm Springs, California, where notable Corvette figures including Dick Guldstrand and Zora Arkus-Duntov were present. At this event, Duntov signed memorabilia associated with the car. In addition, the Corvette was invited to attend the Bloomington Gold Earthquake ?88 event, which featured the largest gathering of L88 Corvettes assembled to date.
Additionally, during Ellingsen's ownership, the 1969 Chevrolet Corvette L88 Coupe was widely documented in automotive publications over several decades, reflecting its significance within the Corvette collector community. The car was first referenced in <em>Keepin' Track of Vettes</em>, appearing in the November 1979 issue and again in the April 1980 issue. In 1984, the Corvette was featured in two issues of <em>Auto Trader</em>, including June 1521, 1984 and June 2228, 1984. Additional national magazine coverage followed in <em>Popular Hot Rodding</em> in the December 1984 issue. The car continued to appear in enthusiast publications such as <em>Vette Vues Magazine</em> in August 1986 and again in January 1989. It was also featured in <em>Corvette Illustrated</em> in the Fall 1986 issue. The L88 Corvette continued to receive attention in the late 1980s with features in <em>All Chevy</em> in the August 1987 issue, <em>Corvette Fever</em> on March 28, 1989, and <em>Car and Driver</em> in the June 1989 issue. Later documentation includes another appearance in <em>Vette</em> magazine in the September 1995 issue. <b>Cover appearances highlighted the car's growing recognition, including <em>Super Chevy</em> in the April 1987 issue, <em>Keepin' Track of Vettes</em> in the Summer 1987 issue, and <em>Vette</em> magazine in the April 1989 issue.</b> Collectively, these publications provide extensive period documentation of the vehicle and help establish its longstanding presence within the Corvette enthusiast and collector community.
On September 24, 1987, Steve Chapman purchased the Corvette from Ellingsen. The car changed hands again in January 1990 when it was sold to Henry Seebach Jr. of Middlebury, Connecticut. In 1994, the Corvette was acquired by Ray Norwell, who later displayed the car at the Winter Meet held at Cypress Gardens in Florida in 1995.
On May 20, 1995, Victor Preisler of Calabasas, California became the next owner. Preisler registered the car with the personalized license plate L88CORV During Preisler's ownership the Corvette received several major recognitions. In 1996 it earned both the Bloomington Gold Survivor Award and Bloomington Gold Certification. That same year it was awarded an NCRS Top Flight Award at the Corvette event in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. In 1997 the car received the NCRS Performance Verification (PV) Award at a Western Regional meet.
Ownership later passed to Ken Funk, who sold the Corvette in February 2004 to noted collector and NCRS member Steve Bramati. Bramati had known about the car for many years but had lost track of it until discovering it was available for sale in 2004, at which point he immediately purchased it. Under Bramati's stewardship the Corvette continued to achieve major recognition. In 2004 it again received Bloomington Gold certification. In 2006 the car was invited to Bloomington Gold as part of the Special Collection featuring Survivor cars, and in 2008 it was inducted into the Bloomington Gold Hall of Fame. In 2009, the Corvette was invited to the Corvette & Muscle Car Nationals L88 Showcase, where it received an International Showcase Certificate. In 2018 it was again invited to Bloomington Gold for the special L88 Explosion display. In 2019 the car earned an NCRS Top Flight Award at the Illinois Meadowdale event with an outstanding score of 99.3 and received the Judges? Choice Award at the Meadowdale Motorsports & Memories show. During Bramati's ownership, respected Corvette authenticity expert Al Grenning of Corvette Certification and Authentication Services validated the engine pad.
In 2019, the Corvette was acquired by Bill Wallace of Wallace Chevrolet, becoming the tenth documented owner in the car's well-recorded history.
