Based on the venerable R107 platform, the Mercedes-Benz 560 SL was first introduced in 1986 exclusively in the United States, Japan and Australian markets. It offered the most powerful engine in any SL during the 1980s, a 227-hp, 5.5-liter V8. This enabled the 560 SL to achieve a top speed of 130 mph and accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about 6.5 seconds, both slightly faster that previous SL models despite increased weight. The increased power required both an improved rear suspension and limited slip differential both of which were added for the 1986 model year.
In addition to performance, the 560 SL offered a level of safety and luxury fitting the Mercedes Benz nameplate. It came standard with anti-lock brakes, leather upholstery, alarm system and airbag. These features were not cheap as the 560 SL had a retail price in excess of $48,000. This hefty figure did not deter many potential buyers and the 560 SL proved to be one of the best-selling Mercedes Benz models of the late 80’s with annual average sales exceeding 12,000 cars.
In March of this year a 1988 560 SL sold for $92,500 at an auction at Amelia Island. Granted, it only had 3,000 original miles on the odometer and was in great condition, but this example with 68,000 miles on the odometer is just as straight and the interior is just as nice. There are a few blemishes on the exterior, but no dents or scratches. This car has always been driven in good weather and is totally rust free. There is a new black convertible top and the hard top is like new as it came off just after the original owner purchased it. All gauges and lights work perfectly. The A/C blows ice cold. The radial tires have approximately 7,000 miles. The car has been used on a regular basis on nice days for the past two summers by the dealer that is presenting this car today. You will not find a more stunning car. A better 560 SL in this condition with these original miles will be hard to come by.
