About the 1970 Pontiac GTO

The second generation of the Pontiac GTO was produced from 1968 to 1972. It continued the legacy of the original GTO, further cementing its status as an iconic American muscle car.

Introduced in 1968, the second-gen GTO featured a redesigned body with a more curvaceous and aggressive appearance. It retained its distinct dual hood scoops and GTO badging, but the overall styling was updated to reflect the changing trends of the late 1960s.

Under the hood, the second-gen GTO continued to offer a range of powerful engine options. The standard engine was a 350 cubic-inch V8, while optional powerplants included a 400 cubic-inch V8 and the legendary Ram Air IV engine, producing up to 370 horsepower.

In 1970, the GTO underwent a restyling, adopting a more prominent Endura front bumper and a split front grille. The 1970 model year also saw the introduction of the Judge option, which was a high-performance package featuring bold graphics and performance upgrades.

The Judge package emphasized the GTO's street credibility and added to its reputation as a formidable force in the muscle car market.

Throughout its second generation, the GTO faced challenges due to increasing government regulations and a shift in consumer preferences away from high-performance cars. As a result, engine outputs decreased over the years to comply with emissions standards.

The 1972 model year marked the end of the second-gen GTO, as it transitioned into a trim option on the Pontiac LeMans for the following model years.

Despite the challenges, the second-gen GTO remains an important chapter in the muscle car legacy. Its powerful engines, aggressive styling, and cultural significance have earned it a special place in automotive history and continue to make it a sought-after classic among muscle car enthusiasts and collectors.
