2002 Mazda MX5 Miata Convertible

2002 Mazda MX5 Miata Convertible

As like Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance the Mazda Miata is referred to as "Jinta Ittai' which loosely translates as "Rider and Horse as One", (Glasshoppah!). The car was introduced in February of 1989 at the Chicago Auto Show and is in the Guinness Book of World Records as the best selling sports car with 531,890 units. It sports a 50/50 weight distribution, and to aid with weight loss even the pedals are drilled, a strategy known today at the "Gram Strategy". Its name comes from the 5th iteration of the Mazda Experiment and was heavily inspired by the Lotus Elan.

For consignment a modified and very fast yellow streak of Japanese lighting in the form of a 2002 Mazda MX5 Miata convertible. This one has less than 600 consignor stated miles on it since it has been upgraded with a 6.0L LS2 mill. Plenty of other goodies and a 1st place award for a modern muscle car all wrapped up in MX5 zoom, zoom.

Note: Due to modifications of the emissions control devices installed by the manufacturer, please check your local, state, and federal laws to determine if this vehicle is applicable for use on public highways in your area.

Yellow bathes this bulbous aero designed car from head to toe. No hidden headlights here, just smoothed over surfaces all around enabling it to slice through the air like a hot knife through butter, ( or a butter colored knife through air!). It has a black convertible top which is near flawless just like the paint that covers the well minded gapped steel. A Jaguar-esque front oval grille is front and center and it is flanked by fog lights. Power mirrors hang from the doors and this car has a super sexy profile from the side, especially when the top is in the down position. Rounded tail lights float over a rounded neoprene body matching bumper in back, and below dual chromed zoom tube exhaust tips peek out from the rear roll pan. This skate glides forward on nearly new low profile rubber and 16-inch polished XXR wheels.

As a sucker for this bumble bee look combo, the interior is wrapped in black broadcloth, which is on the door panels and mixes with molded black plastic and vinyl to form the undulating panels with built in map pocket hovering just fore of the armrest. The high back bucket seats are looking like they've never been sat in, and have a very sleek design. These chairs have a snappy center wide console racing up to the dash between them, also made from nicely crafted black molded plastic. The factory dash is a beautifully designed sports car setup with inset round overlapping aftermarket gauges in black with white lettering surrounded by black bezels. The padded rally steering wheel is the perfect size to spin at a fast rate when carving a tight curve. The touch screen head unit for the radio has been taken away leaving a radio delete panel. Plenty of options still remain though are peppered throughout, including power steering, power locks, power windows, cruise control and AC and it's just a sports car, but not ANY sports car... A black custom fabricated tube stock roll bar is fitted behind the buckets. Black carpeting covers the floors and checkered protective carpeted mats are above the black. I feel like I'm at the finish line.

Under the hood, squeezed in the engine bay which is very clean, and patina free, a large all aluminum consignor stated 6.0L LS2 which was rebuilt. It has forged pistons within its confines. The mill also sports aftermarket Trick Flow 235 heads and an FTR valvetrain. It's fed by EFI and on back is a Tremec TKX 5-speed manual in to spin the rear tires through an aluminum driveshaft, Stage 3 axles, and a Ford 8.8 inch 3.55 TracLoc rear. Headers and a stainless steel tube and glass pack style muffler system is now on and its been tig welded. We note that the catalytic converters have been removed.

The car rides and handles on all independent coil overs for all 4 corners of the suspension, with 4 wheel power disc brakes. There is no real rust to speak of, and plenty of cast aluminum parts canting towards the "gram strategy" of weight minimization.

This the car performed and handled flawlessly and handled the test track with 3 tires tied behind its convertible top. Snappy braking, great acceleration and the top moves top and down with ease and can be done while you are moving albeit not really the safest or wisest choice. All functions and options were working at the time of the test drive save for the AC and heat as they have been removed.

Now you can have your MX5 and beat it too. Because you are sitting behind an LS2 Corvette mill, and roll bar interior. So go ahead make your day.
