Original "Herbie The Love Bug."
The lovable Volkswagen Beetle with a mind of its own! This Herbie was used in the first "Herbie The Love Bug" movie, then also used in the second movie "Herbie Rides Again." In "Herbie Rides Again" it was modified by Disney engineers, the body was mounted backwards on chassis to enable rear wheels to turn and allows for it to be driven backwards at a high rate of speed. The interior features the complete factory Volkswagen front dash and steering wheel for the actor, then there is an additional steering wheel column and reversed seat for a stuntman to drive Herbie backwards.
The Love Bug was released in December, 1968 and the movie grossed $51 million at the box office after costing just $5 million to make. It was such a successful investment that the characters were continued onwards through six additional films. Most significantly in that it was one of the first movies where the car was one of the stars of the movie, putting it in the company of James Bond's Aston Martin DB5 in Goldfinger and Steve McQueen's Mustang in Bullitt.
