1968 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray

Description:

1968 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray The C3 Corvette, built between 1968 and 1982 was the third generation of Chevrolet's venerable Corvette sports car. Occasionally seen as polarizing, the C3 garnered both praise and criticism for its radical design, purpose and driving dynamics. Expectations were huge when the model launched. Zora Arkus-Duntov and Billy Mitchell, the second generation C2 Corvette designers, had just built the hugely successful, powerful, and respected Sting Ray Corvette. Even today, the Sting Ray is widely regarded as one of the best Corvette models ever made. For consignment, a little red Corvette in modified form. Bought by the consignor's father in 1980 with visions of a custom car the project began. The car was stripped down to the frame and all body work completed. A 1973 nose was installed and the flip up headlights were removed in favor of the more aerodynamic design you see. Out came the 427ci V8 and in went a 454ci mill with a 4-speed Muncie transmission. The car was finished around 1984/85 and its first showing was a Super Chevy show where it won 2nd place in the modified class. Eventually in 1999 the car was sold, but as luck may have it in 2015 our consignor was able to buy the car back on his birthday with an updated 502ci V8 and an automatic transmission. Since then, the car hasn't even covered a scant 1000 miles and was always stored in a heated and cooled garage with only trips out for a wash and a trip for ice cream with the family...talk about a pampered life. Exterior Repainted in red at the time of customization and now showing its age in the form of cracks, crazing, and scuffs in the body and paint. The most noticeable is a section of paint lifting on the driver's side of the nose just forward of the hood. Clear plexiglass covers are installed overtop of rectangular headlights and this does away with the trademark Corvette roll up headlights. A 1973 style nose has been installed in place of the chrome bumper version it was born with and flows smoothly into bulged fenders with their respective coves that flank a twin scooped and louvered hood. Side pipes give some wow factor down low. Later model C3 mirrored T tops close up the roof and buttress B pillars melt into the rear quarter panels that have had flares molded on to accommodate larger rear tires. Bringing up the tail end are the iconic quad taillights, while in stock configuration they have been replaced with lenses that bulge outward. A split rear bumper set in chrome hangs below these taillights and reverse lights mounted in the rear valance. Snappy American Racing Chrome Nugget wheels are on all 4 corners and are shod in blackwall radial rubber. Interior In a wonderful 1960s style, the overstuffed padded bolster seats with deep inserts and high backs provide the seating for this A ticket ride. These are floating in a sea of red carpeting which is all nice and clean. A red dash can be seen upfront, and with the new raked angle dash, gauges are not only located front and center of the driver but in a cluster in the center of the dash that are surrounded in a faux woodgrain. Just below is an aftermarket stereo neatly inserted which is now digital AM/FM/CD capabilities. Temp wheels controls are present for all of your cabin comfort needs along with fiber optic lights for taillight operation. This console also houses an aluminum panel with a B&M shifter poking thru. Side door panels are nicely preserved and looking down we note that the original clutch pedal is still present which would make things a snap to switch back to a manual transmission. Drivetrain With all this red let's consider the red line, that being of the tachometer and to get there under the hood is a 502ci V8 crate engine. A single 4-barrel carburetor is atop, and shiny valve covers, and an air cleaner cover can be seen. The intake manifold is plumbed for nitrous, and a purge solenoid and tube is also seen. Some patina and slight corrosion and surface rust is noted within this engine bay. There is a 3-speed TH400 automatic transmission bolted to the back of the engine with a 4.11, (AP stamping code), rear axle in the back. Undercarriage Very nicely preserved with some patina on the black paint of the undercoating, but all else is unremarkable and structurally sound. For the front suspension we note an independent SLA type which features coil springs, mounted shock absorbers, and spherical joint steering knock pivots. In back is an independent SLA forged aluminum upper and lower control arms and steering knuckle, transverse mono leaf springs, a steel stabilizer bar, and spindle offset. Disc brakes are on all 4 corners and manual steering helps carve the corners. Headers flow directly into ess bent pipes that feed the side pipes. Note, the spare tire holder and tire has been removed. Drive-Ability She fired right up and our date with the test track began. Here it behaved very well with raw nearly unending acceleration, great handling thanks to all the above geometry, and bias free panic stopping. The leather overstuffed styled seats were nice and comfy, and I tried to take advantage of this car but then I decided against it. All functions were working at the time of the drive; however, we didn't dare try the nitrous system. A custom fiberglass sculpted body with the powerful 502ci V8 engine. Nicely aged red leather interior, and just a few faults in the paint and bodywork.
