1969 Plymouth Barracuda Fastback

1969 Plymouth Barracuda Fastback

The Plymouth Barracuda was produced from 1964 through 1974. Many people don't realize the difference between a Barracuda and 'Cuda. There is a difference. The Formula S is an option package. The Cuda is a different option package with typically more power than aesthetics and occurred later in the life of the Barracuda. The birth of the Barracuda was conceived from a Plymouth Valiant. That's a far cry from the most iconic muscle car of all time.

For consignment, a Barracuda fastback from Plymouth right out of 1969. This fastback is late 60's cool and was meant to be a sleeper car if you will, with no racy badging or fancy stickers, just a mild mannered family car until you get in and turn the key, then that 440ci V8 comes to life and you very quickly realize you will be going for more than groceries! Restored over the course of the last 4 years with an engine built by Scott Cross, a paint job by John's Hobby Shop, a rebuilt transmission, an interior kit from Legendary Auto Interiors and all new rubber seals for the body, it's hard not to give this fast fish a second look. Read on and let me bait your hook...

A variant of Electric Blue bathes straight rust-free panels which are minding their gaps very nicely. The paint is in the deep end of the pool for the vast majority of the body but is not without some inclusions, light spray areas and evidence of body filler. In front a dual opening grille houses the parking/turn signal lights and the single round headlights. A nicely preserved bumper frames underneath the twin grilles. Wheel well molding accentuates the lower body nicely and 15-inch shiny American Racing Torque Thrust wheels wrapped in staggered width rubber from 2021 help create the look. Speaking of which, the highlight of this car is the long gently sloping rear window which transitions into the rear deck gracefully and seamlessly. A slightly angled trim surrounded and satin silver dressed tail light deck with another clean bumper below and dual exhaust tips on the bottom and we have the Barracuda presentation.

A black interior courtesy of Legendary Auto Interiors is now in and sports a floor shift console, and a carpeted rear cargo area and trunk. The front buckets are excellent, as well as the slightly modified dash. Racing between the buckets is a factory correct black plastic console with an aluminum and chrome topper to hold the Hurst pistol grip automatic shifter. Moving forward, in place of the original 3 round pod cluster is now a custom layout in front of the driver with a bevy of white face AutoMeter gauges. The original radio location has been deleted and now down low in dash central is a modern AM/FM/CD player by Kenwood. A nice heavily padded 3 spoke rally style steering wheel is in front of this dash and looks great inside this environment. The rear bench does fold down for extra storage. A shout out to the door panels front and rear which are also new Legendary coverings. Black fade free carpet covers all floors including the trunk. New weather-stripping on the doors is noted

A consignor stated rebuilt 440ci Mopar V8 now resides where a pedestrian slant 6 once did reside. Bathed in Hemi Orange, this mill now sports an Edelbrock aluminum intake manifold and 4-barrel carburetor along with a billet serpentine accessory front drive. A consignor stated rebuilt A727 Torqueflite automatic is bolted to the back and sends power to a 3.54 geared 8 3/4"" rear axle. The engine bay presentation is nothing short of stunning with smoothed over inner fenders in electric blue, new power steering, and soft supple hoses. I think we have a nibble on the line...

Structurally sound and having powder coated headers feeding back to Flowmaster mufflers to create an automotive symphony. Up front we note an independent front suspension with coil overs and new disc brakes, while in the rear this fish swishes its tail with leaf springs and drum brakes. A nice mix of patina, black steel and surface rust on the usual suspects is noted as well as a pair of sub frame connectors for a more rigid chassis.

This car lit right up, and we were off to the test track. We put her through the paces, and it handled nicely, had limitless acceleration, and was a comfortable cruiser. An A+ updated ride here, so much so that my crack decoder and partner in crime opted for a third lap around our fabled test track.

1 of 17,778 fastbacks built for the 1969 model year, and to be presented in such a nice condition this could be seriously considered a find. When one thinks of the Barracuda you could only see it as a fastback, and here we have it gracing the halls of Classic Auto Mall.
