Remember the Volkswagen Atlas Cross Coupe Concept that debuted at the 2018 New York auto show? Well, its debuted in production form on the eve of the 2018 Shanghai auto show looking nearly unchanged from the show car we saw last year. Part of Volkswagen s massive product offensive, the Teramont X, as it will be known, joins the lineup as a sportier-looking alternative to the family-friendly Atlas (Teramont in China). Most of the Atlas Cross Coupe Concepts styling cues carried over with minor tweaks. The grille for, instance, uses chrome strips instead of light bars. Compared to the larger Atlas, the Teramont Xs roofline swoops down dramatically, hinting at a smaller rear window, and its C-pillar is chunkier. Even the front end has distinct cues like squared off headlight clusters and wider lower air intakes to further distinguish it from its larger sibling. Volkswagen hasnt revealed whats under the hood of the Teramont X but its probably fair to guess that the same 3.6-liter V-6 and eight-speed automatic transmission powers the Atlas five-seat, fastback sibling. Its not yet clear whether the Teramont X is a Chinese market exclusive or whether its going to be sold in other global markets. Wed wager its likely to come to North America as the Atlas Cross Coupe, slotting in between the Tiguan and the three-row Atlas. With the growth of the midsize, two-row crossover segment , Volkswagen would be giving up sales to Chevrolet , Hyundai , Subaru , and Honda if it didnt sell the Atlas Cross Coupe on this side of the pond.
