Avid muscle car enthusiast Ralph Barbagallo grew tired of car shows and cruise nights and felt a powerful urge to drive his potent Mopars the way their creators intended. Confident that others shared the same feeling, he created SuperCar Races, a series devoted to organizing and promoting drag racing for muscle cars made between 1957 and 1979. There are three categories for cars: Factory Appearing, Factory Stock, and Pure Stock. The rules for these three vary, but the philosophy underlying all of the categories is pretty simplethe cars competing should look nearly identical to how they looked when brand new. That means they race with correct, factory engine blocks, heads, manifolds, transmissions, rearends, and suspension. It also means they race on the type and size of tire they were originally equipped with, which in most cases means bias-ply skins. Competitors are allowed to make internal engine modifications, add certain safety equipment, and make other relatively modest changes that must be hidden from view. On April 6-7, 2019, 20 SuperCar Races members gathered at Atco Dragway in New Jersey for the organizations 13th Annual Ice Breaker. As is typical (and somewhat astounding considering the stock appearance of the cars and the relatively skinny OE bias-ply tires they run on), a majority of the participants clicked off 11s and 12s. Best e.t. of the weekend honors went to Ted Daros, who tripped the lights at an impressive 10.780 seconds at 129.43 mph in his beautifully turned out 1969 Nova SS396. SuperCars Races next event is the April 27-28 SuperCars Battle of the Brands at New England Dragway in Epping, New Hampshire. This event is followed by SuperCars New vs. Old, May 25 at Lebanon Valley Dragway in New York.
