Something of a dark horse in GM's stable of midsize muscle cars, the Buick Grand Sport series of the mid-'60s shared a handsome family resemblance to its Chevelle SS and Pontiac GTO siblings. First introduced with a 400 V8, the GS 400 was joined by the GS 340 for 1967. Essentially the same car with a 340 cubic-inch V8 versus a 400, the GS 340 was a lower-priced alternative to its bigger-engine brother and GM cousins. Fitted with a 4-barrel carb and dual exhaust, the 340 punched out 260 spirited horses and could be had with either a 3-speed manual or a 2-speed automatic transmission. A firmer suspension for more agile handling on curvy roads also came standard with the GS 340. Being a Buick one would've expected it to be conservatively styled, like GS 400 brother. And yet the GS 340 had some surprising eye candy. Available in either White or Platinum Mist, the junior GS sported a dazzling array of red accents. Specifically, the simulated hood scoops, body side Rally stripes, rear accent panel and wheels were all red, making for a sharp contrast. The interior was fitted with a plain but comfy bench seat. This particular GS 340 is a rare find " a virtually all-original example with just 67,912 original miles. Still wearing its original Platinum Mist paint, the car boasts its original quarter panels, floors and trunk pan, all in very solid condition. The few minor body blemishes are pointed out in the picture gallery. The interior is likewise amazing in its originality and condition. Options include power steering, an AM/FM radio, 8-track player, Speed Alert and the very rare automatic headlight dimmer (that's the chrome gizmo on the hood near the windshield base). With less than 70,000 original miles this GS runs as you'd expect " smoothly and with plenty of power. The car steers and tracks true and the brakes haul it down ably and without drama. Indeed, it drives very well for a car that celebrated its 50th birthday two years ago. Please call Carroll Street Auto at (603) 627-5595 for further information or to schedule time to view this incredibly original example of a 1960s muscle car. Financing is offered through our approved lender, trades are welcome and enclosed shipping can be arranged.
